Direct or Indirect?

Here is a great link that details the rule:

The simplest explanation is, check the referee:
Direct: arm horizontal. ("Directly" at the goal)
Indirect: arm straight up.("In" the air)
(I made up the hints)

The referee indicates a direct kick by pointing arm forward. The referee DOES NOT have to keep arm in that position
The referee indicates an indirect kick by raising arm in the air and MAINTAINS arm in that position until the kick has been taken and the ball has touched another player or goes out of play.
