On October 16th, Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl broke the story that Anthony Precourt, the owner of the Columbus Crew, was planning to announce a potential relocation of the team to Austin. When Precourt confirmed that story at a press conference the following day, the hopes and excitement of the Austin soccer community shifted into overdrive.
Last week Dave Greeley, the president of Precourt Sports Ventures, met with local supporters at a standing room only event to discuss the club's plans and answer questions.
This week the Austin City Council is expected to discuss a resolution that would direct city staff to begin analyzing city-owned land for a potential Major League Soccer stadium and practice facility.
As the days pass, the story continues to unfold and the idea of Austin becoming home to a Major League Soccer team continues to gain momentum.
The River City Rangers are proud and excited to support the movement to bring professional soccer to the Austin area. We believe that the proposed relocation of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew to Austin creates the potential for increased exposure to and opportunities within the sport of soccer for all players in the community. We encourage our players and their families to join the conversation and voice their support for bringing MLS to Austin.
